Who We Are
Our vision is of communities on the East Coast that are healthy, inclusive and just; where all people have a sense of well-being, hope for the future and connection with one another. We seek to address the causes and effects of social distress and inequity by working with others for positive change, providing services and mobilising people to care for each other.
Presbyterian Support East Coast offers our services to all in the community, regardless of race, beliefs or background.
You don't have to be Presbyterian to be helped by, work for, or support Presbyterian Support.
Presbyterian Support East Coast is one of seven autonomous regional organisations making a difference together across New Zealand under the Presbyterian Support banner. We concentrate on assisting children, youth and families; elderly people; people with physical disabilities; people with neurological conditions; and terminally ill people and their families.
Presbyterian Support East Coast is an incorporated society registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957. Our forerunner, the Presbyterian Social Services Association of Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay, was formed by Presbyterian Church members in March 1946, and opened the Hillsbrook Children's Home early in 1947.
The organisation has progressively widened its focus and work through the years as it has responded to community needs.
Presbyterian Support progressed to providing care for older people and now offers a full range of residential services, along with day activities. Presbyterian Support has operated Cranford Hospice since 1982, and in recent years has provided a wide range of community services for Hawke's Bay and Gisborne people in need.
Presbyterian Support shares a common heritage with the Presbyterian Church and many of our financial supporters and volunteers are Presbyterians. However we are independent and responsible for raising our own funds for our services and determining the direction of those services.
Because we believe Jesus Christ calls us to care for each other, and especially those less able to care for themselves, we give effect to our mission throughout the East Coast community by:
-
Providing a range of quality services to fill gaps in community need
-
Enabling people to respond to the needs of others
-
Careful stewardship and sharing of resources entrusted to us
-
Being heard on issues that will enhance a just society
