Cranford April 2009 Newsletter
In this issue Barry Keane talks about the challenge should palliative care by a privilege? issued by Barbara Monroe at the recent Hospice Palliative Care Conference.

Highlights of this edition include further information on the Liverpool Care Pathway Intitative, the presentation of the painting "Tears of Ranganui" presented by local artist Hoteera Riri and putting patient choice at the centre of "care of the dying".

Leadin Story from Shaun Robinson titled "Getting results and giving hope", Enliven celebrates successful innovations, new developments at Cranford, and introducing the Gisborne Area Manager and a new Work Readiness programme in Tairawhiti that results from collaboration between Family Works and Real People.

Barry Keane talks about the "Health of the Community .. the way a community cares for its dying is a touchstone for the health of that community" in reflecting on community support and the challenges for Cranford as the specialist provider. Patient Bruce Fraser says "it takes a while to sink in" when discussing his experiences as a terminally ill patient, the Liverpool Care Pathway model is detailed and the Learning and Development unit is updated.

This edition continues the advocacy theme with Shaun Robinson (CEO) stating that "some Ministry of Health officials do not accept that there is a problem, and that our staff and residents deserve more resources", however he thanked those who contributed to our "writing to the Prime Minister" campaign, recognising that it did have some impact given the Governmnets fee increase announced in December.

This month we launched a seperate dedicated Supporter for Cranford Hospice which will be maintained from hereon, so effectively we now have 3 newsletters - a Gisborne region PSEC version, a HB version and a Cranford version.
The major news items being the launch with the HB DHB of Community FIRST, the impending rebranding of C&F services to the new national brand Familyworks, and the Expansion of the Cranford Site.

This edition contains an advocacy theme with Shaun Robinson (CEO) calling for readers to help advocate on our behalf. An Insert addressing the crisis in Funding for Services for Older People, in a letter format to the Prime Minister, is offered for signoff and resending, as a tangible initiative at the discretion of readers.
