The Community Cafe is a new concept for older people where they attend for as much or as little of the Community Cafe menu of activities they wish.

Older people may call in for a cuppa and a biscuit, stay for a home cooked two course meal ($7.00), participate in Tai Chi ($4.00), stay for social activities and go on a bus trip.

The Community Cafe has now been running for four months and is very successful with a core group of eight to ten attending regularly.  The venue is provided by St Marks Anglican/Presbyterian Church, Takapau and is held fortnightly on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month.  Local Anglican Minister Dot King has been supportive and involved in the Community Cafe since it opened. The Anglican Church Pastoral Care Group will be making lunch for those who choose to stay for a meal.

The Community Cafe concept has brought together different agencies to provide a 'club' like social setting for older people in rural areas.  The Community Cafe has been so successful that a coordinator has been appointed to run the programme. The coordinator has introduced new activities such as mystery bus trips (bus provided by Age Concern), quizzes and guest speakers.

Older people attending the Community Cafe are very enthusiastic about it and love the concept with news of the Community Cafe spreading to Porangahau where a group has approached Presbyterian Support East Coast and Age Concern with a view to doing something similar.
